I recently found myself walking through the streets of a place that taught me more than any textbook ever could. A place that shaped me into who I am today—a place that gave so much, but also took a little, too. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world, and I cherish the moments when I can step back into those memories.
Dear Charleston,
You showed me love in its truest form and pain that left a mark. You introduced me to homesickness but also the comfort of finding a new home.
In classrooms and on your cobblestone streets, you educated me. You gave me the chance to pass that knowledge on, shaping the minds of children who would one day take the lessons of this city with them, just as I have.
You reminded me of the struggles my ancestors faced and anchored me in a history that is both painful and empowering. You rooted me in a deeper understanding of who I am.
You helped me discover my love for art, for capturing moments through the lens of a camera. You taught me that, over time, even the smallest details can develop into something beautiful.
Your cracked sidewalks and hidden alleyways showed me that perfection is an illusion, and it’s okay to embrace the imperfections that make us unique.
You revealed so much I didn’t know I was searching for, showing me that growth comes from the discovery of what has always been within us or around us, waiting to be noticed.
You surrounded me with a community that lifted me up, lifelong friends who, like earthquake beams, hold steady the foundation of your historic structures, and my life.
Even from a distance, your church steeples stand tall, guiding me back to you, to familiarity and comfort.
You remain steadfast, even as flood waters try to change you. You stand your ground, telling your story over and over, just as you tell us to keep living and sharing ours—your harbor and seas share this truth.
Your bridges taught me the importance of connection, of reaching out across divides to find common ground.
Charleston, you gave me so much. I hope I’ve given something back to you, too. I promise to continue doing so, no matter where life takes me- because I’ll always come back to you.
In hospitality,
Brandon
